Keyboard Concerts welcomes back famed Irish pianist Barry Douglas, and you can win tickets
Barry Douglas, stellar pianist and gold medal winner in the 1996 International Tchaikovsky Competition, is a favorite of Fresno’s classical-music community. And it seems that Fresno is a favorite of his, too.
Douglas returns for the fifth time to the Philip Lorenz Memorial Keyboard Concerts series at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 11, at the Fresno State Concert Hall.

It’s no surprise to series artistic director Andreas Werz that Douglas will be back on campus.
“Barry knows that this a prestigious recital series with a long history — 46 consecutive seasons now,” Werz says. “He appreciates the fact that we can offer the ideal setting for a solo recital, that our audience is knowledgeable, and that we provide great hospitality. Plus he and I have become good friends over the years.”

Douglas, born in Northern Ireland, is a prolific recording artist and sought-after soloist who performs with leading orchestras around the world. He’s also a conductor who keeps his Irish musical heritage alive with Camerata Ireland, a chamber orchestra he co-founded that counts Queen Elizabeth II as one of its patrons.
In his Fresno concert, he will perform Schubert’s Sonata in C minor, Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition,” and the Brahms Op. 76 cycle.
Werz, needless to say, is a fan.
“He is a master of the Romantic repertoire and over the years has performed for us all the great works of that era,” Werz says of Douglas. “His deep intellectual understanding, his expressive powers, and his unlimited technique make him an ideal interpreter of the master works of the 19th century.”
Douglas previous performed with the Keyboard Series in the 1998-99, 2010-11, 2012-13, and 2014-15 seasons.
Tickets are $25 general, $18 seniors and $5 students.
