The List: Moment Musical kicks off season, Filmworks catches fire, and I get an award from Sierra Art Trails

1. Take a moment to enjoy Moment Musical

One of Fresno’s best-kept chamber-music secrets kicks off its new season on Sunday, Sept. 15. Moment Musical is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year.

Its opening concert, titled “Schumann — And All That Jazz,” features Robert Schumann’s Piano Quintet in E flat Major, op. 44; Giovanni Bottesini’s Gran Duetto No. 3 in D Major for Two Double Basses; Three Pieces for Flute by Joaquin Rodrigo, Gabriel Faure and Russell S. Howland; and Jazz Suite for Tenor Saxophone and Contrabass.

2. Hey, I’m getting an award!

I’m honored to receive this year’s Keeper of the Flame award from Sierra Art Trails, the annual open-studio tour in the Yosemite foothills. The award is presented annually by the Sierra Art Trails Committee to a “business or organization in recognition of their contributions to the arts and the creative community.”

There’s a fun story behind the award itself. The welded steel sculpture was created and donated by Fresno artist Chris Sorensen in 2004, and it is passed on from winners year to year “as a symbol of commitment and dedication to supporting the arts.”

So, for a year I’ll get to display a Sorensen sculpture proudly in my living room!

I’ll be on hand to accept the honors at the gala reception of the Sierra Art Trails Preview Exhibition on Saturday, Sept. 14, at Stellar Gallery. The event is 4-9 p.m., and I’m told I’ll be receiving the award around 5 p.m. Come by and say hi.

You’ll also get a chance to preview this year’s Sierra Art Trails, which will be held Oct. 4, 5 and 6. You can go to the official website for details on how to purchase catalogs, which serve as admission tickets.

3. StageWorks cabaret

One welcome tradition of StageWorks Fresno is the once-in-a-run cabaret that comes after the second Friday performance of a production. Though “The Book of Will” isn’t a musical, the cast is full of talented musical theater performers, so I’m sure there will be some great moments. (Non cast-members often perform as well.) The cabaret starts a little bit after the performance (which starts at 7:30 and runs more than two and a half hours) is over. There is a separate admission.

I posted my review of “The Book of Will” earlier today, by the way. And here’s a preview focusing on standout actor Mark Standriff.

4. On fire

If it’s the second Friday of the month, it’s time for Fresno Filmworks. You can catch “What You Gonna Do When the World’s on Fire?” The independent documentary was a critical favorite at the Venice Film Festival.
