Meet LACO’s new music director: Here’s my piece on Jaime Martin

For fans of classical music, let me once again share a tip for those wishing to experience a world-class experience:

The Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra is not to be missed.

I’m biased about LACO in that regard, considering that I’ve had the opportunity to write stories about the ensemble over the past couple of years for the organization’s website. Let me repeat: This jewel of a chamber orchestra, which performs regularly at UCLA’s Royce Hall and Glendale’s landmark Alex Theatre, is considered one of the tops in the world in terms of reputation and innovation. I’ve learned a lot — especially about contemporary classical music — and met some very interesting musicians.

My latest piece for LACO is about Jaime Martín, the orchestra’s new music director and conductor. He is an accomplished flautist who gave up a gig as principal flute at the London Philharmonic Orchestra to get into conducting at an age later than most. Martin makes his debut as music director this weekend (Saturday in Glendale and Sunday at UCLA), and he has exciting plans for the season.
