Sunday pick: Don’t miss the annual Fresno ‘Messiah’ singalong

First Presbyterian Church of Fresno

Julie Carter conducts the 43rd annual ‘Messiah’ singalong.

It’s one thing to hear Handel’s famous “Messiah” sung in concert. But it’s another altogether to sing along. I can attest from firsthand knowledge. Participating in the piece with other choral-music lovers is an immersive, profound experience, especially when you get to the “Hallelujah” chorus.

(And, for those who don’t want to sing in public, don’t fret: You can just sit and enjoy yourself without ever opening your mouth.)

Fresno’s 43rd annual Messiah Sing-Along will be held 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 1, at First Presbyterian Church downtown. Admission is free, and an offering will be taken. If you don’t have your own “Messiah” score, music is available for purchase at the door courtesy of Gottschalk Music.

You can even take a crack at one of the solos if you want (though you’ll have to share the privilege with other aficionados). The solo parts will be sung by those singers who are prepared on the solo and come forward to the front.

As always, the afternoon will be conducted by Julie Carter (director of worship and music at First Presbyterian Church, adjunct faculty at Fresno Pacific University, and artistic director of Soli Deo Gloria Women’s Ensemble) and accompanied by professional orchestra.

Singers are invited to attend and sit in sections. Those members of the audience not singing are invited to sit in the back or in the balcony.

It’s a Fresno tradition that for many people ushers in the holiday season.
