Win tickets
to Keyboard's
sold-out
Yunchan Lim
concert

Yunchan Lim’s piano concert Friday (8 p.m. at Shaghoian Hall) is the hottest ticket in town. And I’m giving away a pair of tickets to the sold-out event.

Some background: Lim is the young Korean sensation who in 2022 won the 16th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition at age 18, becoming the youngest person to ever win the top prize. “He’s considered a rock star by his Korean countrymen,” says Andreas Werz, artistic director of the Philip Lorenz International Keyboard Concerts series. When Lim performed in San Jose last month, the Mercury News headlined the event “Young pianist everyone’s talking about performs.”

Besides San Jose and Fresno, Lim’s only other California concert this season will be in April in La Jolla. This makes the Fresno engagement a magnet for out-of-town visitors.

For the first time in Keyboard’s 51-year history, a concert is being moved to a larger hall because of demand for tickets — in this case from the Fresno State Concert Hall to Shaghoian Hall on the Clovis North High School campus. Even after the move to the larger venue, which seats about 750 audience members, the concert quickly sold out.

The performance will begin at 8 p.m. Friday, a half hour later than the regular 7:30 p.m. start time. (In case unwary ticket holders show up at Fresno State, this will give them a chance to drive to the Shaghoian.) Lim’s program includes Mendelssohn’s Fantasy in F-sharp minor, Op.28.

I would love to take my 12 yr old daughter to see Mr. Lim perform as I believe he will inspire her as a fellow pianist and Korean. One thing about Fresno that we would like to share is that music thrives here in the Central Valley and it is a great place to raise a family!

    Mr Munroe
I would love the tickets to KBrd concert tomorrow night for a special reason. That reason is my aunt Zenora. Almost any musicians in Fresno Co., I guess probably over 40 yrs old, will know who this is. She left Kingsburg to study music at Julliard, Chicago Institute of Music and USC. She returned to the valley to teach piano, band and choir in public school, direct church choir and hand bells and become a valley accompanist extraordinaire. I can remember attending KBrd concerts with her when they were held at the Memorial Auditorium and Northwest church for many years before CSUF. We attended almost every concert until Covid hit. She was one of the first members of the Fresno Musical club and was an active performer there until the onset of Covid.
For the past 2 weeks she has been living at a rehab facility but intends to return home next week. She is still as sharp, strong willed and determined as ever. I’d like to be able to “spring” her from rehab tomorrow and bring her to the concert. If they put her in restraints, which they’d have to do for her to miss this. I promise to attend and give her a full report. Zenora turned 94 on August 1. I love you Zee.

Fresno is known for its beautiful white Ash trees. English composer Benjamin Britten wrote this lovely song called “The Ash Grove”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BzZ1Aidzw48
I’d love to hear YUNCHAN LIM improvise on its gorgeous tune while in Fresno.
