Video coverage: Embrace the voice with Fresno State’s annual arts song festival and opera workshop

In a special edition of “The Munro Review on CMAC,” we go on location to give you a musical preview of two stellar annual events showcasing vocal music at Fresno State. The seventh annual Fresno State Art Song Festival continues Friday and Saturday with a number of notable public events. And the upcoming Fresno State “Opera Celebration!” on April 18, under the artistic direction of Anthony Radford and featuring scenes from “La Traviata,” will provide an exciting preview of the music department’s fully staged opera next year.

My video story includes an interview with vocal professor and art song festival Maria Briggs; piano accompaniment by collaborative accompanist Drew Quiring; and interviews and musical performances from three talented students (Emily Lopez, Tay Bumgarner and Hector Agredano) taking part in the festival.

Here are some highlights from the festival (all free and open to the public):

2:30-3:30 p.m. Friday: Faculty recital and Q&A with Maya Kherani, soprano, and Drew Quiring, harpsichord. Room 127, Fresno State Music Building.

7-8 p.m. Friday: Poetry, Composition, Voice & Piano duo, Vocal Showcase finals. Fresno State Concert Hall.

9:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday: Classical Singer First Round National Auditions, Fresno State Concert Hall.
