Win tickets to Tigran Hamasyan Trio at Keyboard Concerts

Classical piano is usually the star at the Philip Lorenz International Keyboard Concerts series. But every so often, jazz takes center stage.

Pianist/composer Tigran Hamasyan is celebrated for his jazz piano, but he’s also known for something more: He fuses jazz improvisation with the rich folkloric heritage of Armenia. His combo (he collaborates with Marc Karapetian, electric bass, and Arthur Hnatek, drums) plays 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Fresno State Concert Hall. The performance is a special event of Keyboard Concerts and is co-sponsored with the Fresno State Armenian Studies Program and the Fresno State Jazz Studies Department.

I’m giving away two pairs of tickets.

Besides crossing over from one genre to the other, Hamasyan also is known for his eclectic musical collaborations. Consider this nugget from his website: “Tigran’s forthcoming body of music “The Bird of a Thousand Voices “will be presented as a unique transmedia music theater piece with same title and gets a world premiere at the Holland Festival in Amsterdam June 8th 2024. The work is inspired by an ancient Armenian folk tale “Hazaran Blbul,” which is about the search for world harmony through self-discovery, sacrifice and rebirth, now spectacularly coming to life in an intriguing immersive light show with shadow play, digitally programmed voices and live music.”

This is set to be a great concert. I am not familiar with this artist but have long been a jazz piano following Keith Jarrett, Oscar Peterson, Ahmed Jamal and so many others. I admire the collaboration of the Keyboard concerts and the Armenian Studies department. Nice to see people talking to each other.

When i first saw Tigran, several years ago, I thought he is one of the mst talented performers I have had the fortune to see. His integration of using Jazz and Armenian music, creates such a unique and entertaining sound. Anyone who loves Armenian music and Jazz, should not miss out on this performance. He should have a full house.
