Weekend pick: Madera Theatre Project goes under the sea with ‘The Little Mermaid’
The Madera Theatre Project closes out its summer season with the crowd-pleaser “The Little Mermaid.” The show opens Thursday, July 25, and runs through Saturday, Aug. 3. For a preview we turn to German Gutierrez, Jr., who plays the role of Sebastian. Here’s our discussion:
Q: Have you ever been in “The Little Mermaid” before?
A: I have been a part of a production of “The Little Mermaid”. I was a Freshman in high school who was cast in the role of Flotsam. Unfortunately the show was canceled two weeks before opening due to Covid. I’m so glad I was able to fulfill doing this marvelous production
Q: Tell us about your Sebastian costume.
A: It’s amazing. I love all the details that went into it. I wear a beautiful shade of red on my body as well as my face. The costume shines and sparkles and the corset just ties everything together. My makeup is amazing thanks to the makeup artist whose vision was truly out of this world.
Q: What is something special we should know about the Madera production?
A: The Madera production of the show offers great opportunities such as allowing the younger students to work with more experienced actors. Students are able to learn from the older actors. We have much more diversity by having older and younger people as well as having people that come from all around the Central Valley to put on a wonderful production.
Q: Have you ever tried to sing underwater? Is it possible?
A: I don’t believe I have ever tried to sing underwater. I have tried yelling underwater to see how loud I can be though. It didn’t work out that good.
Q: Since you were cast as Sebastian, have you eaten crab?
A: Funny you should ask, I have never eaten crab. I’m not a big fan of seafood but the other day I was able to try the second cousin to the crab. A lobster, I felt really bad right after.
Q: Do you dream about “Under the Sea”?
I mean ,who doesn’t? I often think about being able to breathe underwater and what it would be like if i was able to live down in the depths of the sea!!
