Weekend pick: Tower Quartet blends music and nature with outdoor concert at Kings Canyon National Park
What’s better than getting to hear the Tower Quartet perform?
Getting to hear the Tower Quartet perform outside in the glorious environs of Kings Canyon National Park.
You’ll get that opportunity at a program titled “In the Land of Towering Trees” that will be performed 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 18, at the Panoramic Point Picnic Area at the park. The venue is reachable by a paved, narrow road from the Kings Canyon Visitors Center. Admission is free (although the park entrance fee applies). Parking at the picnic area is limited, and a shuttle will be provided from the visitors center beginning at 1 p.m. if the Panoramic Point parking lot is full.
The quartet, which has in recent years brought a jolt of youthful energy to the Fresno area chamber music scene, will perform a program of nature-inspired music, including a movement from Haydn’s “The Birds” quartet. The venue is close to three spectacular hikes: Panoramic Point (with a view of Kings Canyon and the High Sierra); the General Grant Grove; and the Park Ridge Trail.
The concert is sponsored by the Fresno Philharmonic Association, Orpheus, and the Music Performance Foundation.
Now in its sixth season, the Tower Quartet is known for performing in alternative venues (including bars!) as well as more traditional locations. It’s also known for its eclectic programming, including contemporary composers.
