Win a pair of tickets to opening night of Broadway in Fresno’s ‘Come From Away’

Update: I forgot to include a question on the original post. I’ve added one now. If you already submitted a comment, no worries. Your entry is still good.

Here’s one of The Munro Review’s biggest giveaway opportunities of the year: I’m giving away a pair of tickets to opening night of “Come From Away,” the latest production from Broadway in Fresno.

The show plays at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12, and Wednesday, Nov. 13, at the Saroyan Theatre. It’s a quick turnaround to enter: The deadline is 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 11.

“Come From Away” is a beautifully written and conceived musical focusing on an unlikely subject: the days immediately following 9/11. When American airspace was closed after the attack, planes already in the air arriving from Europe couldn’t land in the U.S. They were diverted to a small airport in Newfoundland, Canada. It was built in a time when airplanes needed a refueling stop before heading over the Atlantic. That meant it had the runways to handle the jumbo aircraft diverted following 9/11. Suddenly a small town was inundated with thousands of stuck passengers. The stories of some of those townspeople and passengers are intertwined in a heartfelt musical tale that has been charming audiences for years.

The contest is open to members, donors and individual sponsors of The Munro Review. Tax-deductible memberships start at $5 a month, and you can make a one-time donation of as little as $3. (Paid memberships help keep the site running, and paid members get special members-only benefits. Please consider a paid membership in support of independent, local arts journalism.) A free membership option is available. For details on how to join, go to the Membership and Sponsorship page. No purchase, donation or membership is necessary to enter the ticket giveaway.

To enter this giveaway, leave a reply on this post (see below) answering this question: Have you ever been on a plane that has been diverted? (If you’d rather just tell us why you want to see the show, that’s fine, too.) Deadline to enter is 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 11. The winner will be picked at random and notified by email. Please remember to check your email on Monday evening to see if you’re a winner.

I don’t see a question but I’ll answer one anyway. I’ve wanted to see this show since I first heard the premise. I’m excited this is coming to Fresno!

I didn’t see a question listed but would love to win the tickets! My Dad’s flight was grounded at Heathrow on 9/11 and when this musical opened I felt an instant connection. The story is moving and inspiring! Thank you for the chance to see it!

I didn’t see a question listed but I would really love to see this. I’ve heard the music and think I’m not a fan (?), but I feel like in my gut if I saw it live that might deeply change my opinion.

I did not see a question. Is it a trick question? Should I have scrolled down further?

This cultural experience about airline/world disruption sounds to be right up my anxiety alley. I wish that my anxieties had a musical backdrop!

  • Love music theater, composed my own wind orchestra work (9-11: Voices Echo) about 911, and am looking forward to hearing this brilliant work live!

I don’t remember being diverted, but my elderly mother’s was as she was on her way to visit us from Michigan. She never thought to call us as she waited to see how the airline would resolve the issue. We were frantic but she was calm as a cucumber. She couldn’t understand why we were so worried when the plane didn’t land at LAX as expected. I believe they bussed her in from Ojai arriving hours late.

Because of heavy fog our plane from Las Vegas to Fresno was diverted to Burbank where we spent the night at our expense. Finally the next
day we were flown to Palm Springs where we changed planes for our flight to Fresno arriving just before the fog set in that evening.

Can’t remember being diverted but was grounded for a couple of days in Copenhagen because of severe snowstorms. Tried to see this play when it was on Broadway, but it was completely sold out. There was not a single seat left in the house!
