Friday pick: Alexander Malofeev plays for Fresno State’s Keyboard Concerts series

The concert: Russian pianist Alexander Malofeev performs for the Philip Lorenz International Keyboard Concerts series.

Details: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 5, Fresno State Concert Hall. Tickets are $25 general, $18 seniors, $5 students.

The performer: Malofeev, now 20, won the gold medal at the 8th International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians held in Moscow in 2014. He began studying piano at age 5.

The program: Malofeev will play works by Schubert, Rachmaninoff and Medtner.

The superlatives: The newspaper Il Giornale writes: “Alexander Malofeev manifests the piano mastery of the new millennium in itself.” Andreas Werz, artistic director of Keyboard, says the series is privileged to “arguably the most sensational young pianist on the planet.”
