Opening weekend: 5 Things to Know about Fresno State’s new production of ‘Red Velvet’
Editor’s note: Fresno State’s theater department presents “Red Velvet,” a play by Lolita Chakrabarti. This Fresno premiere will run Dec. 6–14, 2024, in the John W. Wright Theatre. It is a deeply resonant exploration of race, artistry, and the challenges of breaking barriers,
Miguel A. Gastelum, the department’s publicity point person, kindly offers five things to know about the show:
1. ‘Red Velvet’ tells a powerful story that transcends time.
The play is based on the life of Ira Aldridge, a Black actor who broke racial barriers by performing the title role of Othello on London stages in 1833 during a politically charged era. “Red Velvet” examines themes of identity, prejudice, and resilience, making it a story with undeniable contemporary relevance.
Win tickets: The Munro Review is giving away a pair of tickets to an upcoming Tuesday-Saturday performance of ‘Red Velvet.’ To enter, leave a comment on this post telling us what night you’d like to attend next week. Deadline is 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 9.
2. This is a Fresno premiere.
While Red Velvet has been celebrated globally since its debut in 2012, this is the first time it will be staged in Fresno. The production offers a rare opportunity for local audiences to experience this gripping, thought-provoking work.
3. Brad Myers caps off his remarkable career with this production.
After a remarkable 42-year career shaping the Department of Theatre and Dance, Brad Myers directs his final production with “Red Velvet.”
“For my final University Theatre production, I wanted to direct a play which had a variety of challenging roles for Theatre Arts students, and which told an important story,” says director Brad Myers. “Prior to reading ‘Red Velvet,’ I had never heard of Ira Aldridge, who has been described as ‘the most important actor you’ve never heard of.’ I am thrilled and proud to share his inspirational struggles and triumphs as the first black actor to have ever played Othello on the London stage.”
Myers’ contributions extend far beyond directing, as he has inspired generations of students to embrace the power of storytelling. His retirement is bittersweet, as the department loses a pillar of its creative foundation but celebrates his remarkable legacy.

4. The production is a collaborative triumph.
With nearly 50 students, faculty, staff, and alumni involved, Red Velvet is a testament to the program’s creative synergy. The company includes Theatre and Dance majors, alumni, and community members. It is supported by both faculty and student designers, technicians, and crew members. The production also features striking period costumes and a simple, elegant set that transports the audience to the 19th-century London stage.
5. Don’t miss your chance to witness this historic event.
The production runs Dec. 6–14, 2024, with performances at 7:30 p.m. and a Sunday matinee on December 8 at 2 p.m. Tickets are available at the Fresno State Box Office or online. Given the significance of this production — both as a Fresno premiere and Myers’ farewell — demand is expected to be high.
Whether you’re a seasoned theatergoer or new to live performances, Red Velvet promises an unforgettable evening that celebrates storytelling, artistry, and the enduring impact of one man’s courage. Be part of this milestone event at Fresno State and experience the transformative power of theater.
