June ArtHop Big-Event Alert: Don’t miss the Mural District’s ArtHop Block Party

In the mood for something out of the ArtHop ordinary? A merry band of ArtHop venues and community partners in the Mural District has come together to offer an ArtHop Block Party. It’s the place to be at the June installment of ArtHop, the monthly open house of galleries and studios in the downtown and Tower District neighborhoods.
Official participating partners are: Arte Américas, Valley PBS, CMAC, Fresno Arts Council, Fresno Metro Black Chamber of Commerce, Fresno Street Eats, M Street Arts Complex, Prettyman Promos, and South of Shaw.

Here are the official directions.
• Pick up an ArtHop Pass at any participating location and collect a mark at each stop as you go. Once you have collected at least four marks, you’ll be entered to win a curated gift basket filled with local goodies.
• Want to double your chances? Hit all nine spots and complete your pass!
• Submit your pass by 8 p.m. at any participating location. Winners will be announced the next day.

Sarah Elizabeth Theller’s “(After) Ragnarök” is a live performance for ArtHop that will be on display as a video documentation on the gallery’s following opening days.
Here’s the first part of her artist statement:
Informed by autobiographical experience and Late Iron Age cultural research, my 2023 Graduate art exhibition Ragnarök explored and likened intergenerational trauma and child abuse to an apocalyptic “end of the world” as told in Norse mythology (and comparable to Armageddon/The Rapture in Christian mythology). Viking legend tells of Ragnarök (Old Norse for “fate[/doom] of the Gods”), the near-total destruction of the cosmos by flood and fire. Additionally, according to mythology, Valgrind (“Death’s Gate”) is the entrance to Valhǫll (Anglicized to “Valhalla”), where Odin welcomes the souls of battle-slain warriors. Ragnarök incorporated mixed, nontraditional media to depict disturbing and gory imagery, which I use as an analogy to trauma, abuse, and the subsequent mental wounds from repeated exposure to violence.
