To kick off this year’s membership drive, you can win four tickets to the May 3 performance of ‘Disney’s Aladdin’

Broadway in Fresno closes out its 2023-24 season with the biggest show in the lineup, “Disney’s Aladdin,” and I’m matching that superlative with the biggest giveaway of the year for The Munro Review: One lucky winner will receive a four-pack of tickets to the Friday, May 3, performance. (A big thank-you to Broadway in Fresno for providing the tickets.) The show opens Wednesday, May 1, and plays seven performances through Sunday.

The contest is open to members, donors and individual sponsors of The Munro Review. You can join for as little as $5 a month. Details on memberships and how to enter the contest are below; a free membership is available. The Munro Review is under the fiscal sponsorship of the Community Media Access Collaborative, a registered non-profit. All memberships and donations are tax-deductible.

I’m using the giveaway to anchor a membership drive for The Munro Review, which as a non-profit relies on donations from members and sponsors to keep the virtual doors open. Believe it or not, TMR is now in its seventh year of continuous and extensive coverage of the local arts scene. I am thankful beyond belief to my generous donors, many of whom have been with me from the beginning. However, there’s always a bit of “churn” in membership support, and I’ve been losing a few more paying members than I’ve been gaining. That’s why I’m using the “Aladdin” giveaway not only as a fun way to make our winner happy but also to remind you all that I am still here, week in and week out, keeping a spotlight on the arts community. I currently have about 325 monthly and annual donors, which means that along with several loyal organizational sponsors, I’m able to pay two regular freelancers, website expenses and pay myself for about nine hours a week of work. (Which, um, I usually far exceed, which is my own donation in time to the Fresno arts community.)

I hate asking for money, so I don’t do it very often! Here’s my brief spiel: If I could reach a level of 700 paying members, I’d be able to make the site even better.

To build the membership base, I’m offering an incentive for the “Aladdin” giveaway: Each new paid membership will receive two entries in the giveaway.

Tax-deductible memberships start at $5 a month, and you can make a one-time donation of as little as $3. (Paid memberships help keep the site running, and paid members get special members-only benefits. Please consider a paid membership in support of independent, local arts journalism.) A free membership option is available. For details on how to join, go to the Membership and Sponsorship page. No purchase, donation or membership is necessary to enter the ticket giveaway.

Oh Genie, go ahead and free yourself.

AFTER you get to this one: Genie, I wish for you to have Fresno provide unlimited mental health support for all.

And of course thanks so much for all you do for the Central Valley Donald. Headhunting Doug and Heather made your site 10x better (if that was even possible).

To make Fresno better, I would ask the Genie to provide only SAG approved plays for longer runs and more professional productions for Broadway in Fresno.

Outreach more for the homeless so our youth feel safer in our Tower District when they want to enjoy the arts.

I have a couple but I would love that the Genie make sure that every elementary student be guaranteed Art and Music every week, and that it can’t be taken away because there is something “more important”.

I would wish for more available services for special needs kids. The wait lists for everything is too long. There are not enough supports in schools or private practices to meet the needs of our community. As a mom of 2 special needs kids and as a teacher this is unacceptable.

I would wish for Fresno to have affordable housing for all and the construction of of a new state of the art theater to continue having top class musicals stop by.

New member here! HUGE supporter of the arts!

if I had one wish to make Fresno a better place, It would to have a community that was more accepting of those who are different than themselves. Too many people face discrimination and hate because they don’t look/act/think the same and it’s horrible.

I would love Fresno to have more schools that had gymnasiums for our students to have physical education.

Oh how I wish we had a free forum for advertising creative concerts, plays, exhibits and performances of all kinds in the Fresno area. The Fresno newspaper publishes stories of fantastic things going on across the country with little about our own local news of positive activities. We have a wonderful and artistic resource of talent in our own community and it’s not easy to locate and rarely acknowledged in the paper. If I were to come across a Genie, that would be my one wish.
