1. Catherine Parr.

Henry VIII’s six wives take center stage at Broadway’s hit musical — so much so that the all-powerful monarch doesn’t even get a cameo. By transforming history’s most famous Tudor wives into pop stars, the night becomes a rousing anthem to women’s empowerment.

“SIX” is still packing crowds in on Broadway, which is a seventh (and bonus) reason why It’s Fresno’s big theater event of the year.

To celebrate, we’re giving away two pairs of tickets to lucky members of The Munro Review.

The tickets are for the Thursday, April 3 performance.

(A special thanks to Broadway in Fresno for making these giveaways possible.)

Tax-deductible memberships start at $5 a month, and you can make a one-time donation of as little as $3. (Paid memberships help keep the site running. Please consider a paid membership in support of independent, local arts journalism.) A free membership option is available.

Jane Seymour. Not only did she give birth to Henry’s heir, but she actually made it to not get beheaded by Henry.

Plus her modern namesake is never-ending gorgeous.

Picking one is difficult, they are unique and fascinating women. Anne Boleyn is a complex character and my favorite because she knew what she wanted and went after it. She didn’t want to be just another mistress. Thank you for the opportunity to see the show!

Anne Boleyn – she was such a bold and intelligent woman even outside her relationship with Henry VIII. Her short life was fascinating.

Anne Boleyn of course. Of all the wives she certainly seemed to have the most dramatic rise and fall. You have to appreciate a woman who really knows how to bring the mayhem.

Catherine Parr because she left a legacy apart from being married to Henry and that is what she wanted to be remembered for.

Anne Boleyn because she’s a strong-willed and intelligent woman who refuses to be intimidated by Henry’s power, and her determination to reform the English church and secure her daughter Elizabeth’s future is truly admirable.

My favorite wife of King Henry was Natalie Portman, she’s just a great actor so I got to give it up to her. Scarlett Johanson was okay too.

Anne Boleyn was absolutely unhinged (in the best way), and here are six reasons why her lore is the wildest of all Henry VIII’s wives:

She Finessed an Entire Kingdom for a Crown – Most women Henry slept with just got jewels and castles, but Anne held out for a whole-ass throne. She made Henry rewrite the country’s religious laws, ditch the Pope, and launch the English Reformation just to marry her.

People Thought She Was a Witch – Rumors flew that she had a sixth finger, a “devil’s mark” on her body, and that she bewitched Henry into loving her. Some even whispered that Elizabeth I (her daughter) was actually the Antichrist because of Anne’s supposed sorcery.

She Was the Medieval Regina George – Anne was smart, stylish, and influenced an entire court’s fashion. Ladies copied her French gowns and flirtatious manner, while noblemen fawned over her—until they were accused of being her lovers and executed.

She Might Have Trolled Henry Even After Death – Some say her ghost haunts the Tower of London, Hever Castle, and Blickling Hall, sometimes carrying her severed head. A real-life Bloody Mary legend.

Her Execution Was a Theatrical Spectacle – She kept her composure like a boss, gave an elegant speech, and even paid the executioner. Henry went so extra with her beheading that he hired a French swordsman instead of the usual English axe (as if that made it classier).

Her “Curse” Seemingly Ruined Henry’s Life – After she died, Henry never had another successful marriage. Jane Seymour died, Anne of Cleves ghosted him, Catherine Howard got executed, and he ended up obese, paranoid, and covered in sores. Some say Anne’s downfall cursed his entire reign.

Anne Boleyn (2nd wife) was my favorite. She was born and bread for aristocracy, educated in France and the Netherlands, sequestered and unsuspecting until brought to the court as a lady in waiting. When the King annulled his first marriage to we’d Anne, she was treated horribly by the system and the king. I have great empathy for her strength and her sad demise. She was also a catalyst for the reformation!

  • My favorite queen is Ann Boleyn! She was young, beautiful, fierce and worked hard to get what she wanted! My favorite song is Heart of Stone (sung by Jane Seymour) and I would love to see it live! I’m in socal but planning to make the trip for SIX!
