His return to Fresno means a bit more for the local community. With a large Armenian population in the Central Valley, Babayan, who is Armenian born, has developed a strong and lasting connection with audiences in the area. He has performed in Fresno multiple times over the years.
“Sergei Babayan gets to share his music making and artistry with this very enthusiastic community here in this intimate venue. I think that, in itself, is something very special,” said Michael Krikorian, a piano professor at Fresno State.
That connection, paired with the setting of the Fresno State Concert Hall, creates a unique experience that blends world class artistry with a community centered atmosphere.
Babayan’s program will feature piano transcriptions of songs by composers such as Schubert, Schumann, Liszt, Rachmaninoff and Gershwin. The selection shows his wide range of musical interests and his ability to bring vocal music to life on the piano.
Over the course of his career, Babayan has built a reputation for his refined touch and balanced phrasing. His performances are known for their emotion and precision, which have helped make him a sought after artist around the world.
The concert is co-sponsored by the Fresno State Armenian Studies Program, reflecting Babayan’s connection to the local Armenian community.
With his international career and connection to Fresno, Sunday’s performance is expected to stand out for local audiences.
