Finnish pianist will offer a striking finish to Keyboard’s 2017-18 season
Keyboard Concerts closes its 2017-18 season with Juho Pohjonen, one of Finland’s most prominent musicians. He will perform a program that includes works by J.S. Bach, Mozart, Schubert, and Franck. The concert is 3 p.m. Sunday, May 20, at the Fresno State Concert Hall.

Andreas Werz, artistic director of the Philip Lorenz Memorial Keyboard Concerts series, is particularly excited to bring Pohjonen to Fresno.
“Last summer I heard Juho’s recital at the Beethoven Haus in Bonn, and I can say that he is truly an outstanding talent,” Werz says. “Prior to his Fresno appearance he will give a recital for the La Jolla Music Society — so once again we are in good company.”
Pohjonen has given acclaimed recitals at the major venues in New York, Washington, D.C., San Francisco, Vancouver, Detroit, La Jolla, London, Hamburg, St. Petersburg, Helsinki, Warsaw, Hong Kong, and Antwerp.
Werz’s thoughts on the Fresno program:
I personally am looking forward to Franck’s Prelude, Chorale, and Fugue, a masterwork of the Romantic period with Baroque connections that is often neglected and has only been performed once before during the 26 years that I have been directing the series. Also, the overall conception of Juho’s program is striking: he will showcase Preludes, Fugues, and Fantasies that were composed in different eras of music history.
The season’s most popular concert in terms of sales was the Chilingirian-Bagratuni- Hakobyan Trio in March. (“I am thankful to our loyal supporters from the Fresno Armenian community,” Werz says.)
The most memorable concerts this season?
That’s difficult to answer. We presented Mexico’s leading pianist, Mauricio Náder with a varied and refreshing program by composers from Mexico and the United States; we had Yefim Bronfman who is at home in the most prestigious concert halls in the world; we had the incomparable Irish pianist Barry Douglas, and so forth…..
Werz says he’s proud to have presented a great mixture of seasoned and younger, upcoming artists with diverse backgrounds presenting a wide spectrum of repertoire. “This is exactly our mission,” he says.
Tickets are $25 general, $18 seniors and $5 students.
