To finish this year’s membership drive, you can win tickets to the Fresno Philharmonic’s final concert of the season

It’s a Joyce Yang kind of year for Fresno.

Yang, the celebrated concert pianist who has enchanted Fresno audiences in the past, will make it a twofer this season: She performed at the Philip Lorenz International Keyboard Concerts series in April. And now she’s returning as the guest artist for the Fresno Philharmonic’s final concert of the season (7 p.m. Saturday, June 1, and 3 p.m. Sunday, June 2, at Shaghoian Hall). Titled “Bolero Blowout,” the program also features Yang on Barber’s Piano Concerto and Gershwin’s “An American in Paris.”

To celebrate, I’m giving away two pairs of tickets to any performance.

The contest is open to members, donors and individual sponsors of The Munro Review. You can join for as little as $5 a month. Details on memberships and how to enter the contest are below; a free membership is available. The Munro Review is under the fiscal sponsorship of the Community Media Access Collaborative, a registered non-profit. All memberships and donations are tax-deductible. See below for more info on how to enter.

I’m using the giveaway to help anchor a membership drive for The Munro Review, which as a non-profit relies on donations from members and sponsors to keep the virtual doors open. Believe it or not, TMR is now in its seventh year of continuous and extensive coverage of the local arts scene. I am thankful beyond belief to my generous donors, many of whom have been with me from the beginning. However, there’s always a bit of “churn” in membership support, and I’ve been losing a few more paying members than I’ve been gaining. That’s why I’m using the “Aladdin” giveaway not only as a fun way to make our winner happy but also to remind you all that I am still here, week in and week out, keeping a spotlight on the arts community. I currently have about 325 monthly and annual donors, which means that along with several loyal organizational sponsors, I’m able to pay two regular freelancers, website expenses and pay myself for about nine hours a week of work. (Which, um, I usually far exceed, which is my own donation in time to the Fresno arts community.)

I hate asking for money, so I don’t do it very often! Here’s my brief spiel: If I could reach a level of 700 paying members, I’d be able to make the site even better.

To build the membership base, I’m offering an incentive for the Fresno Philharmonic giveaway: Each new paid membership will receive two entries in the giveaway.

Tax-deductible memberships start at $5 a month, and you can make a one-time donation of as little as $3. (Paid memberships help keep the site running, and paid members get special members-only benefits. Please consider a paid membership in support of independent, local arts journalism.) A free membership option is available. For details on how to join, go to the Membership and Sponsorship page. No purchase, donation or membership is necessary to enter the ticket giveaway.

To enter this giveaway, leave a reply on this post (see below) saying you’d like to attend the concert.

Deadline to enter is 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 12. The winner will be picked at random and notified by email that afternoon.

There have been so many exciting performance venues, already this year, but surely one of the highlights of the early part of 2024, will be the upcoming Bolero Blowout, featuring the Fresno Philharmonic. Because of the societal changes away from hardcopy information, the Munro Review continues to keep the Fresno area informed of these amazing Performances.

I’ve been a Munro financial supporter for many years so I hope that doesn’t disqualify me. I’d love tickets to the Sunday afternoon concert.

I earlier asked to be considered for the Sunday matinee tickets but have discovered that I’ll be going to the Giants/Yankees game on Sunday, so I would now prefer to be considered for the Saturday evening concert. Sorry about that. And many thanks if you can make the switch.
