August’s arts calendar proves there’s no need to hibernate through the heat. From photography inspired by a Greek adventure and a collaborative gallery show to Mozart in the museum and poetry beside the river, the coming month offers plenty of reasons to step out in the evening and soak up Fresno’s creative side.

Photography: Joshua Moulton’s The Odyssey — Spectrum Art Gallery will present The Odyssey, a photography exhibition by gallery president Joshua Moulton, from Aug. 6–30. Inspired by a 2025 journey through Greece with his wife, Jessica, the exhibition chronicles Moulton’s own modern odyssey, featuring images from Athens, Meteora, Santorini, Milos, and other destinations that blend ancient history with personal travel. An ArtHop reception will be held Aug. 6 from 5–8 p.m., followed by a Friday Photography Live artist talk on Aug. 21 at 7 p.m. 608 E Olive Ave. spectrumphotogallery.org

California Opera presents “The Magic Flute”
California Opera presents a reimagining of “The Magic Flute” — California Opera will present a reimagined production of Mozart’s “The Magic Flute” at the Fresno Art Museum on Sunday, Aug. 9 at 2 p.m. in celebration of the museum’s 2026 summer exhibitions. Artistic Director Edna Garabedian produces the fully staged, family-friendly performance, with Rick Adamson directing and Elisha Wells conducting. The cast is led by Fresno tenor Terry Lewis as Papageno and includes an ensemble of local, national, and international opera artists. Admission is free, though donations are welcomed. Seating is limited, and reservations are recommended. www.californiaopera.org

Sanchez will read from his debut book at Respite by the River
Respite by the River: A Reading by Author Steven Sanchez — Escape the heat wave with a free evening of poetry and live music at the San Joaquin River Parkway’s River Center on Thursday, Aug. 13. Award-winning poet Sanchez will read from his acclaimed debut collection “Phantom Tongue,” preceded by live music from Tip Jar. Bring a picnic dinner, lawn chair, or blanket and enjoy the riverside setting. Live music begins at 6 p.m., followed by the reading at 7 p.m. Reserve your spot.
