Soli Deo Gloria gets a head start on America’s 250th birthday with a patriotic concert

By Hailey Milasich

The Soli Deo Gloria choral ensemble is inviting the community to celebrate America’s history through music at its upcoming patriotic concert in Clovis.

Set for Sunday, April 26, at Willow Avenue Mennonite Church, the performance celebrates the upcoming 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The program blends familiar patriotic songs with American folk traditions, offering both a musical and historical reflection on the nation’s identity.

Artistic Director Julie Carter says building the patriotic program for the concert came with unique challenges, especially when working with a women’s choir.

“It’s hard to find… challenging music, good arrangements for women’s voices,” Carter said.

Because much of early choral music was not written for women’s ensembles, Carter says finding high-quality arrangements takes extra effort. Still, she focused on selecting pieces that have lasting meaning and musical depth.

“I try to find music that has stood the test of time …  it’s quality,” Carter said.

The concert will feature well-known selections like “The Star-Spangled Banner,” “God Bless America,” and “America the Beautiful,” alongside folk-inspired works such as “Shenandoah” and “Johnny Has Gone for a Soldier.”

Some of the music also reflects broader themes of the American experience, including freedom and immigration. One piece highlights the hope many immigrants carried as they arrived in the United States in search of a better life.

“I Once Had a Dream,”for example, reflects the idea of American freedom — “that everyone would be free … and that’s really America,” Carter said. “We don’t always succeed but, you know, we keep working at it.”

Music has long played a role in shaping patriotism because of its ability to connect emotion and memory.

“There’s something about combining words and music that stays with us,” she said.

The performance will also feature guest appearances from treble choirs representing Central, Central East and Justin Garza high schools, giving students the opportunity to perform alongside an established community ensemble.

A pre-concert talk begins at 2:15 p.m., followed by the concert at 3 p.m. Tickets range from $12 to $25.
